Oregon's Care Economy: A Snapshot
But the care economy isn’t working for us. The cost to consumers is too high and the pay caregivers receive is too low. The reason is that the care economy is underinvested and ignored.
Mixing research and the personal stories of care providers and people receiving care, Oregon CareWorks, a project of SEIU 503, released a “Snapshot” report that provides a picture of the state’s current “care economy.” The “Snapshot” reveals a workforce of more than 70,000 care providers who are disproportionately women of color struggling with low pay to meet the needs of a growing population of seniors and people with disabilities requiring long-term care or supports in institutions or their own homes.
